In swing time! Eighteen musicians—wind instrument players from the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, joined by leading jazz musicians from around the country—make up Haifa Big Band Orchestra, founded in 2008 by initiative of Haifa Mayor Yona Yahav.
Led by Jeff Howard, the band performs passionately and elegantly a wide repertoire of great jazz music, from big band era standards to modern compositions.
Since its foundation, the Orchestra became a magnet for lovers of jazz from Haifa and the vicinity, who flock to its performances. Haifa Big Band performs classics such as Pearl necklace, Harlem Nocturne, Mood Indigo and In the Mood, joyfully modifying them in many different styles, some surprising: Latin, swing, blues and rock, and even contemporary jazz. Its repertoire includes masterpieces of great jazz composers like Duke Ellington, Vernon Duke, Hoagie Carmichael and Henry Mancini. Big Band Orchestra is the only one of its kind in the country that has its own subscription series.
The Orchestra performed at the Enjoy Jazz festival In Mannheim, Germany, where it played to crowds from across Europe who filled the Hall; Israel Festival where it received enthusiastic responses; and on tour in China, among other places. Haifa Arts Foundation financed the band's representative costume.
